Book Description:
Catalyst production for the transformation of crudes into gasoline and other fuel products is a billion dollar/year business and fluid cracking catalysts (FCCs) represent almost half of the refinery catalyst market.
During the cracking reactions, the FCC surface is contaminated by metals (Ni, V, Fe, Cu, Na) and by coke deposition. As a result, the catalyst activity and product selectivity is reduced to unacceptable levels thus forcing refiners to replace part of the recirculating equilibrium FCC inventory with fresh FCC to compensate for losses in catalyst performance. About 1,100 tons/day of FCC are used worldwide in over 200 fluid cracking catalyst units (FCCUs).
It is for these reasons that refiners’ interest in FCC research has remained high through the years almost independantly, of crude oil prices. However, recent oil company mergers and the dissolution of research laboratories, have drastically decreased the number of researchers involved in petroleum refining research projects; as a result the emphasis of research has shifted from new materials to process improvements and this trend is clearly reflected in the type of papers contained in this volume.
Modern spectroscopic techniques continue to be essential in the understanding of catalyst performance and several chapters in the book describe the use of 27Al, 29Si and 13C NMR to study variation in FCC acidity during aging and coke deposition. In addition several chapters have been dedicated to the modeling of FCC deactivation, and to the understanding of contact times on FCC performance. Refiners efforts to conform with environmental regulations are reflected in chapters dealing with sulfur removal, metals contaminants and olefin generation.
Although they often appear to be permanent, metals are unstable in their service environments and are susceptible to degradation by corrosion. Corrosion occurs when protective mechanisms have been overlooked, break down, or have been exhausted, leaving the metal vulnerable to attack by hostile environments. Control of corrosion is essential in a wide variety of industries. It is of concern to materials scientists and engineers, yet both students and professionals often cannot assimilate the information they need in typical corrosion-related literature because they do not have the specialized background these sources assume. Corrosion Science and Technology clarifies this important background material and guides readers in its practical application. This text integrates the chemical, electrochemical, and metallurgical aspects of corrosion control for application in typical contemporary technologies with economical use of resources. The structures of water, oxides, and metals are examined to identify the interactions by which metals can corrode in natural and relevant artificial environments. The book describes the characteristics of metals and alloys often specified for corrosion-resistant service, and discusses the relative merits of various protective measures and the strategies available to control corrosion. Corrosion Science and Technology profiles aviation, automobile manufacture, food processing, and building construction to show how these sample industries currently address corrosion issues.Written from long experience of both teaching and practice in the field, this book includes explanations of scientific principles and real world applications and case histories. Extensive information on additional corrosion-related literature is provided to guide readers to sources of more specific information. Corrosion Science and Technology gives readers a solid foundation on which to understand and apply corrosion control measures and to comprehend and use information from other sources.

Product Description
The chemical and allied industries employ a multitude of unit operations in product manufacturing. Both chemicals and physical mechanisms are employed in these operations, ranging from simple bulk handling and preparation of chemical feedstocks to complex chemical reactions in the presence of heat and or mass transfer. These operations require application of scientific and engineering principles to ensure efficient, safe and economical process operations. To meet these objectives, process equipment must perform intended functions under actual operating conditions and do so in a continuous and reliable manner. Equipment must have the characteristics of mechanical reliability, which includes strength, rigidity, durability and tightness. In addition, it must be designed at an optimized ratio of capital investment to service life. This book is designed as a handy desk reference covering fundamental engineering principles of project planning schemes and layout, corrosion principles and materials properties of engineering importance. It is intended as a general source of typical materials property data, useful for first pass materials selection in process design problems.
Review
“The writing is clear and interesting enough to maintain the interest of an undergraduate student, but with a straightforward narrative style that will engage even experts in the field. This is a “must have” reference book for all chemistry libraries and researchers working with hydroformylation catalysts.”(Journal of the American Chemical Society, 123:27 (2000)”…the book provides a very good perspective on recent developments in rhodium-catalyzed hydroformylation and should appeal to a wide readership, including both synthetic organic and organometallic chemists, together with chemists and chemical engineers in both academic and industrial environments.”(Applied Organometallic Chemistry, 15 (2001)
Product Description
In the last decade there have been numerous advances in the area of rhodium-catalyzed hydroformylation, such as highly selective catalysts of industrial importance, new insights into mechanisms of the reaction, very selective asymmetric catalysts, in situ characterization and application to organic synthesis. The views on hydroformylation which still prevail in the current textbooks have become obsolete in several respects. Therefore, it was felt timely to collect these advances in a book. The book contains a series of chapters discussing several rhodium systems arranged according to ligand type, including asymmetric ligands, a chapter on applications in organic chemistry, a chapter on modern processes and separations, and a chapter on catalyst preparation and laboratory techniques. This book concentrates on highlights, rather than a concise review mentioning all articles in just one line. The book aims at an audience of advanced students, experts in the field, and scientists from related fields. The didactic approach also makes it useful as a guide for an advanced course.
Product Description:
Constrained optimization models are core tools in business, science, government, and the military with applications including airline scheduling, control of petroleum refining operations, investment decisions, and many others. Constrained optimization models have grown immensely in scale and complexity in recent years as inexpensive computing power has become widely available. Models now frequently have many complicated interacting constraints, giving rise to a host of issues related to feasibility and infeasibility. For example, it is sometimes difficult to find any feasible point at all for a large model, or even to accurately determine if one exists, e.g. for nonlinear models. If the model is feasible, how quickly can a solution be found? If the model is infeasible, how can the cause be isolated and diagnosed? Can a repair to restore feasibility be carried out automatically? Researchers have developed numerous algorithms and computational methods in recent years to address such issues, with a number of surprising spin-off applications in fields such as artificial intelligence and computational biology. Over the same time period, related approaches and techniques relating to feasibility and infeasibility of constrained problems have arisen in the constraint programming community.
Feasibility and Infeasibility in Optimization is a timely expository book that summarizes the state of the art in both classical and recent algorithms related to feasibility and infeasibility in optimization, with a focus on practical methods. All model forms are covered, including linear, nonlinear, and mixed-integer programs. Connections to related work in constraint programming are shown. Part I of the book addresses algorithms for seeking feasibility quickly, including new methods for the difficult cases of nonlinear and mixed-integer programs. Part II provides algorithms for analyzing infeasibility by isolating minimal infeasible (or maximum feasible) subsets of constraints, or by finding the best repair for the infeasibility. Infeasibility analysis algorithms have arisen primarily over the last two decades, and the book covers these in depth and detail. Part III describes applications in numerous areas outside of direct infeasibility analysis such as finding decision trees for data classification, analyzing protein folding, radiation treatment planning, automated test assembly, etc.
A main goal of the book is to impart an understanding of the methods so that practitioners can make immediate use of existing algorithms and software, and so that researchers can extend the state of the art and find new applications. The book is of interest to researchers, students, and practitioners across the applied sciences who are working on optimization problems.
