Foreword
The present volume contains contributions by the staff of the English Department at the Academy of Humanities and Economics (AHE) in t o d i . The aim of the volume is to present students, in a clear and consistent form, with reading material as used during most of the undergraduate and graduate courses in English language and linguistics at the AHE. However, the addressees of the material are also students of English at other higher-education institutions, both state and private, such as teacher training colleges or translation and interpreting centers. The material has been selected and arranged according to the teaching curricula followed by most philological departments in Poland. Chapters 1-111 deal with issues which students are faced with during the first three years of academic instruction, and chapters IV-V tackle topics which students encounter later, e.g. during M.A. seminars. For that reason, the consecutive chapters and chapter parts can be characterized as getting increasingly more difficult and specialized. Chapter One provides students with material concerning English syntax and semantics. The first part of the chapter deals with the syntax of the simple sentence, while the second discusses the structure of the complex sentence. Both parts can be successfully used during, for instance, descriptive grammar courses, esp. in the first two years of instruction. Chapter Two positions selected observations from chapter one, in interpersonal and intercultural contexts of ‘real-life’ discourse. In the first part, the discussion is centered around concepts of linguistic pragmatics. Among traditional topics, students are offered a look at how language can be used to accomplish concrete goals in face-to-face persuasion. In the second part, students are familiarized with broader, sociolinguistic issues which concern relationship between language and culture. The second part of chapter two also brings up some notions which have to do with English language teaching, and thus provides a feasible introduction to the next chapter.
Chapter Three contains an in-depth overview of English teaching methods and strategies; it also discusses the development of English teaching over years. This material is of a special importance to those students who, in their careers, intend to become teachers of English, whether on a classroom or tutorial basis. Chapter Four is a more difficult and specialized contribution, dealing with the many domains of translation and translation theory. Included in the discussion are such concepts as translatability, equivalence, and evaluation, as well as a number of the most typical translation strategies at the word, phrase and sentence level. This material should, in principle, be used by students attending graduate seminars in translation and translation theory. Chapter Five is again devoted to complex, specialized issues which are normally undertaken not sooner than during M.A. research. The chapter describes and evaluates a relatively novel development in linguistics, which has come to be termed as Cognitive Grammar. The discussion tackles the profound questions of the nature of language and cognition, and the relationship holding between them. ‘This relationship is shown to determine the structure of particular grammatical categories in a language, of which English is an example. The authors wish to extend multiple thanks to all those who submitted their contributions to the volume. Also, we owe a debt of gratitude to Professor Kamila Turewicz, the ProRector in Charge of Development of the AHE, for her continuous support underlying the project. Lời giới thiệu
Mạc Ngôn tên thật là Quản Mạc Nghiệp, sinh năm 1955 tại Cao Mật, tỉnh Quảng Đông, Trung Quốc.
Do Cách mạng Văn hóa, ông phải nghỉ học khi đang học dở tiểu học và phải tham gia lao động nhiều năm ở nông thôn. Năm 1976, ông nhập ngũ. Năm 1984, trúng tuyển vào khoa văn thuộc Học viện nghệ thuật Quân Giải phóng và tốt nghiệp năm 1986. Năm 1988, ông lại trúng tuyển lớp nghiên cứu sinh sáng tác thuộc Học viện Văn học Lỗ Tấn, trường Đại học Sư phạm Bắc Kinh, năm 1991 tốt nghiệp với học vị thạc sĩ.
Hiện ông là sáng tác viên bậc Một của Cục Chính trị – Bộ Tổng tham mưu Quân Giải phóng Nhân dân Trung Quốc.
Nhà văn Mạc Ngôn từng được thế giới biết đến qua tác phẩm Cao lương đỏ. Bộ phim cùng tên do đạo diễn nổi tiếng Trương Nghệ Mưu chuyển thể từ tác phẩm này đã đoạt giải Cành cọ vàng tại Liên hoan phim Canne năm 1994.
Truyện dài Báu vật của đời (nguyên tác tiếng Hoa: Phong nhũ phì đồn – tức vú to, mông nẩy) được xuất bản vào tháng 9 năm 1995 và ngay trong năm ấy được trao giải thưởng cao nhất về truyện. Tác phẩm này nhanh chóng trở thành một hiện tượng.

Trung Hoa cổ cũng là nơi xuất hiện nhiều triết gia lớn; nhiều bạo chúa đầy tham vọng; nhiều nhà khoa học vận dụng nguyên lý âm dương, ngũ hành bát quái trong Kinh Dịch- một tác phẩm triết học chứa đựng hạt nhân duy vật biện chứng thô sơ- đẻ khám phá những bí mật của thiên nhiên, vũ trụ, chế tạo những dụng cụ, máy móc tinh xảo, kỳ diệu; nhiều văn thần, võ tướng đầy tài năng, mưu trí. Có những bạo chúa đã lợi dụng những trí tuệ này để xây dựng lăng mộ làm nơi yên nghĩ muôn đời cho chúng, trong đó thiết kế những máy móc, cơ quan kỳ bí, vừa ngăn cản kẻ thù không thể phát hiện ra nấm mồ để quật xác moi xương chúng lên để rửa hờn, vừa để chôn dấu vàng ngọc của cải mà chúng gom góp bằng sự vơ vét bóc lột mồ hôi nước mắt của nhân dân, dành lại cho con cháu chúng sau này. Truyện Bí mật lăng mộ Sở Bá Vương bắt nguồn từ một truyền thuyết nhân gian, tóm tắt như sau:
Tần Thuỷ Hoàng sau khi gồm thâu lục quốc, làm bá chủ cả lãnh thổ Trung Hoa rộng lớn, do bóc lột nhân dân đến tận xương tủy, y đã gôm góp được một số vàng châu báu khá lớn. Y sai hai tên cận thần Lý Tư, Triệu Cao xây dựng một số ngôi mộ cả thật và giả cho mình. Lợi dụng cơ hội đó, hai tên này cũng xây dựng riêng một ngôi mộ cho chúng. Sau đó Lý Tư bị Triệu Cao hại, rồi Triệu Cao lại bị Hạng Võ bắt, Cao đã khai ra địa điểm Tần Thuỷ Hoàng đem cất giấu vào đấy với hi vọng sau này y chết sẽ đem thi hài chôn cất ở đây. Đến khi Hạng Võ bị thua quân Lưu Bang (tức Hán Cao tổ), tự vẩn ở Ô Giang, Lưu Bang muốn mua lòng dân nên cho dân nước Lỗ được mang thi thể Hạng Võ về chôn cất, lại phong Hạng Võ làm Lỗ Công. Triệt để khai thác tình huống đặc biệt đó, bọn thuộc hạ thân tín của Hạng Võ nhớ lời dặn của chủ trước đây, đã bí mật đưa thi hài Hạng Võ chôn cất trong ngôi mọ do Lý Tư và Triệu Cao thiết kế.
Hán Cao tổ tuổi đã già, Lữ Hậu vợ Cao Tổ muốn tóm thâu quyền bính vào tay, sắp đặc việc lập con mình lên nối ngôi, chống lại phe muốn lập Như Ý, con ái phi Thích Cơ lên kế vị. Muốn thực hiện được kế hoạch đó cần phải có nhiều tiền bạc, mụ đã tổ chức việc khám phá lăng mộ Hạng Võ, nhằm chiếm lấy số vàng ngọc châu báu chứa đựng trong đó. Khi vào sâu trong lăng mộ, đoàn thám hiểm đã đụng phải nhiều cơ quan máy móc kỳ bí, nhiều dị nhân quái thú canh giữ, vừa phải dùng mưu trí để vượt qua, vừa phải dùng sức lực để chiến đấu.

Tiểu thuyết Hồ Biểu Chánh bao quát những mảng hiện thực, những nét đặc trưng của vùng văn hoá Nam bộ vào những năm đầu của thế kỷ XX. “Hai vợ” cũng nằm trong xu hướng chung ấy.
