This book integrates a historical and linguistic exploration of world
English, documenting the emergence of the language as a contested site
of linguistic encounters. It revises the understanding of English
spread during the colonial period, emphasizing the agency of
non-mother-tongue English speakers. The book contends that English owes
its existence as a world language in large part to the struggle against
imperialism but not to imperialism alone. To explain English varieties,
the book introduces a new linguistic model of second language
acquisition by speech communities: macroacquisition. Ten chapters focus

“Theo cách hiểu dân gian Nam Bộ, khi nói đến miếu thờ người ta thường liên tưởng đến một gian thờ nho nhỏ nằm bên cạnh trục lộ giao thông thủy bộ hoặc đường bộ, nhằm mục đích thờ cúng những oan hồn chết bất đắc kỳ tử. Các nhà nghiên cứu đã đưa ra nhiều khái niệm về miếu. Toan Ánh trong Tín ngưỡng Việt Nam, quyển thượng, cho rằng: Miếu cũng như đền là nơi qủy thần an ngự. Miếu nhỏ hơn đền (đền nhỏ hơn đình), thường xây theo kiểu hình chữ nhật với hai phần cách nhau bởi một bức rèm, nội điện bên trong và nhà tiền tế bên ngoài… miếu thường được xây trên gò cao, nơi sườn núi, bờ sông hoặc đầu làng, cuối làng, những nơi yên tĩnh để quỷ thần có thể an vị, không bị mọi sự ồn ào của đời sống dân chúng làm nhộn. Trong miếu cũng có tượng thần hoặc bài vị thần linh, đặt trên ngai, ngai đặt trên bệ với thần sắc hoặc bản sao…Tương tự, Phan Kế Bính trong Việt Nam phong tục thì cho rằng: Mỗi làng thờ thần phải có một tòa miếu. Có nơi thì vừa có miếu, vừa có đình… Miếu là chỗ quỷ thần bằng y, đình là nơi thờ vọng và để làm nơi công sở cho dân hội họp. Miếu thường hay kén những nơi đất thắng cảnh, nhất là trên gò cao, hoặc ở nơi gần hồ to sông lớn thì mới hay… Đình miếu cũng theo một kiểu mẫu, chỉ khác nhau to với nhỏ mà thôi…

Nhà văn Sơn Nam trong cuốn Đình – Miễu và lễ hội dân gian đã viết: …Đình – miếu (miễu) là cơ ngơi làm biểu tượng nhắc nhở lòng nhân nghĩa, đạo lý tự giác, vì vậy mà tồn tại và phát triển trong thời gian dài mãi đến nay hãy còn ảnh hưởng sâu đậm… Miễu, do miếu nói trại ra. Nhà thờ riêng của dân (nhà thờ họ) gọi gia miếu. Nhà thờ giòng họ của triều đại gọi là thế miếu… ở đồng bằng sông Cửu Long, chẳng nghe nói đến hai tiếng “Phúc thần”. Các hạng tà thần tuyệt nhiên không có, họa chăng vài am miễu dựng lên nơi có người chết oan ức vì tai nạn xe cộ, đắm thuyền, hùm tha, sấu bắt, cúng sơ sài không tế lễ…Như vậy, Toan Ánh và Phan Kế Bính đề cập đến miếu với tính cách là một nơi thờ tự đi đôi với đình làng, đã có đình thì không nhất thiết phải có miếu, còn am chúng sinh ở tha ma (nghĩa địa) thì để thờ những linh hồn vô chủ. Đây thực sự là hình thức miếu thờ mà đa số là ở miền Bắc và miền Trung. Trong khi đó nhà văn Sơn Nam trình bày về miếu theo cách hiểu phổ biến của dân gian Nam Bộ.”

While the highly technical measurement techniques and methodologies of Value
at Risk have attracted huge interest, much less attention has been focused on
how Value at Risk and the risk-adjusted performance measures such as RAROC or
economic profit/EVA· can be effectively used to improve a bank¡¦s decision
making processes. Academic books are typically concerned primarily with
measurement techniques, and devote only a small section to describing the
applications, usually without discussing the problems that changing
organizational processes in banks may have on business units¡¦ behaviour.
Practitioners¡¦ books are often based on a single experience, presenting the
approach that has been pursued by a single bank, but often do not adequately
evaluate that approach. In actual practice, the choice of how to use Value at
Risk and risk-adjusted performance measures has no single optimal solution, but
requires effective decision making that can identify the solution that is
consistent with the bank¡¦s style of management and coordination mechanisms, and
often with characteristics of individual business units as well. In this book,
Francesco Saita of Bocconi University argues that even though risk measurement
techniques have greatly improved in recent years for market, credit and now also
operational risk, capital management and capital allocation decisions are far
from becoming purely technical and mechanical. On one hand, decisions about
capital management must consider handling different capital constraints (e.g.
regulatory vs. economic capital ) and face remarkable difficulties in providing
a measure of ¡§aggregated¡¨ Value at Risk (i.e. a measure that considers the
overall value at risk of the bank after diversification across risk types). On
the other hand, the aim of using capital more efficiently through capital
allocation cannot be achieved only through a sort of centralized asset
allocation process, but rather by designing a Value at Risk limit system and a
risk-adjusted performance measurement system that are designed to provide the
right incentives to individual business units. This connection between
sophisticated and cutting edge risk measurement techniques and practical bank
decision making about capital management and capital allocation make this book
unique and provide readers with a depth of academic and theoretical expertise
combined with practical and real-world understanding of bank structure,
organizational constraints, and decisionmaking processes.
