Banana Yoshimoto được biết đến đầu tiên, chính là nhờ thiên truyện Kitchen này. Tác phẩm ra đời năm 1987, gắn liền với tên tuổi của cô như một dấu son trên văn nghiệp. Chuyện về một cô gái yêu bếp. Bếp là sự phản chiếu của con mèo đi tìm hơi ấm trong cô, là tiểu vũ trụ của một cô gái đô thị Nhật Bản đang buồn rầu, cô độc. Rồi trong căn bếp nơi một gia đình nọ, có một chàng trai và một người mẹ do người cha cải giới thành, cô tìm ra vẻ đẹp tâm hồn và sự ấm áp trong cuộc sống con người. Khi cô rời xa họ, bà mẹ mà cô đem lòng thương mến bất ngờ bị cái chết mang đi. Trong nỗi đau đớn, sự đồng điệu với người con trai càng trở nên sâu sắc… Và câu chuyện đơn giản và đơn tuyến đó, rút cục lại có thể khiến người ta cảm động một cách cổ điển nhất, làm rơi đi cái vỏ của văn hóa đại chúng, với những tính chất như “phá cách”, “siêu thực”, “manga”, “giải trí”… vẫn thường xuyên được gán cho thế giới của nhà văn này.

Trong một thứ văn xuôi đã tiến gần đến thơ, tiết độ và gọt giũa, tác phẩm của Banana Yoshimoto gợi ra cái không khí vừa thuần khiết vừa u hoài của tâm trạng, trên ranh giới mong manh của những gì được nói ra một cách tằn tiện và những gì được giữ lại kìm nén trong tâm tư thầm kín của nhân vật. Nhưng rồi cũng vậy, văn của Banana Yoshimoto đã khác xa thứ văn chương truyền thống của đất nước cô, khi buồn rầu mà không khắc kỷ, nhẹ nhõm chứ không chất chứa lý tưởng. Nhân vật của cô, ngay từ ban đầu, đã chẳng mang vác bất cứ gánh nặng lý tính nào, chẳng có chút tham vọng về sự nhập cuộc xã hội, lý tưởng nào ngoài cuộc sống riêng tư và đời thường của cá nhân. Họ chỉ cư ngụ trong cái vòng nhỏ của gia đình, bè bạn, một vài người quen, trong cái ốc đảo nội tâm của riêng họ. Và nhà văn, trong cái không gian bé nhỏ đó đã làm nổi bật lên cách thế tồn tại của họ, ngọn lửa hâm nóng trái tim họ, khi sinh lực, tuổi trẻ, sự cảm thông giữa người với người đã trở thành câu chuyện quan trọng nhất.
Những người yêu thích Banana Yoshimoto còn có thể nói về một lối viết thật hiệu quả, của một người kể chuyện có tài ở chỗ đã chạm khắc ít thôi nhưng lại chạm khắc tinh xảo, một dạng bonsai của từ ngữ. Và, dù cái thế giới đó rút cục cũng chả rộng lớn gì, không hề có bóng dáng các tầng không gian, thời gian trong những câu chuyện kể như là nhấm nháp tâm trạng đó, cùng sự duy mỹ đôi khi lặp lại khiến người ta như bị ru ngủ trong cái ngưng đọng của tiểu tiết, Kitchen vẫn là một tác phẩm sâu lắng, ngời sáng, có thể đánh thức trong ta sự đồng cảm với những gắn bó sâu xa, tha thiết nơi con người. Và nữa, nhân vật trẻ tuổi trong tác phẩm của Banana, những người đang cố lòng tìm cho mình một chỗ đứng trong một vũ trụ lạnh lẽo, trống trải, họ khiến ta vui với sự ngây thơ, gan góc, và mẫn cảm thái quá… Có một cái gì rất non trẻ trong cảm giác về bản thân của họ, trong cách mà họ cố vận hết sức lực đơn độc từ cái tuổi trẻ vừa u sầu vừa tươi tắn, để chiến thắng tăm tối và hỗn mang đã luôn rình rập trong tiềm thức…

Kitchen, không nghi ngờ gì, chính là bước khởi đầu tuyệt vời của Banana Yoshimoto. Trong thực tế, tác phẩm này đã nổi tiếng đến nỗi năm 1993, tại hội nghị thượng đỉnh G7, Bộ Ngoại giao Nhật Bản đã tặng các bản sách Kitchen cho các đoàn đại biểu ngoại quốc! Và người ta tự hỏi không hiểu Bộ Ngoại giao có ai đã đọc Kitchen hay không, bởi cuốn truyện liên quan đến một người cha cải giới thành nữ và một cậu chàng thì đi mặc đồng phục học sinh của cô bạn gái đã mất…
Sau Kitchen, Banana Yoshimoto đã thực sự trưởng thành với những tiểu thuyết như N.P, Goodbye Tsugumi hay Amrita… Tuy nhiên, cuốn truyện đầu tay này vẫn là tác phẩm đầu tiên cần phải đọc, như một cánh cửa, để bước vào thế giới truyện độc đáo của Banana Yoshimoto.
