Agatha Christie không còn xa lạ gì với bạn đọc Việt Nam. Bà được xem là nhà văn nữ vĩ đại nhất trong lĩnh vực tiểu thuyết, truyện trinh thám – vinh dự dành cho nhà văn nam có lẽ thuộc về Conal Doyle.

Agatha sinh năm 1890 tại Torquay nước Anh. Năm 24 tuổi bà kết hôn với đại úy phi công Archibad Christie và khởi nghiệp viết văn của mình vào năm 30 tuổi. Bà là con gái út trong một gia đình có cách giáo dục bảo thủ. Được cha mẹ thuê gia sư về nhà dạy học, Agatha chưa bao giờ đến trường.

Vốn là người hay cả thẹn nhưng thông minh và đầy sáng tạo, Agatha tự tìm cách giải khuây cho “thế giới bó buộc” của mình bằng âm nhạc. Không lâu sau đó, bà chọn con đường viết văn.

Tiều thuyết đầu tay của bà: Ai giết ông Ekroy đã làm kinh hoàng làng văn lúc bấy giờ. Trong tác phẩm này, kẻ giết người, tên gây tội ác dã man, tinh vi chính là… tác giả, tức là nhân vật xưng “tôi” trong câu chuyện mà hắn kể. Người xem vô cùng bất ngờ trước lối viết đầy sáng tạo và phá cách của bà.

Ở Việt Nam, các nhà xuất bản đã lần lượt cho ra mắt gần 100 tác phẩm mang tên bà, quả là một con số đáng nể.

Là một người phụ nữ, cách viết của bà nhẹ nhàng, mang tính kể chuyện một cách tự nhiên. Lồng ghép vào đấy những tình tiết lúc thăng lúc trầm. Vũ khí giết người mà bà hay để cho sát nhân thực hiện hành vi giết người đó là thuốc độc (chiếm khoảng 40% tác phẩm).

About the Author

Stanley E. Manahan is professor emeritus of chemistry at the University of Missouri–Columbia, where he has been on the faculty since 1965. He received his AB in chemistry from Emporia State University in 1960 and his PhD in analytical chemistry from the University of Kansas in 1965. Since 1968 his primary research and professional activities have been in environmental chemistry, toxicological chemistry, and waste treatment. His classic textbook, Environmental Chemistry, has been in print continuously in various editions since 1972 and is the longest standing title on this subject in the world. His other books are Fundamentals of Environmental Chemistry, 3rd ed. (Taylor & Francis/CRC Press, 2009), Fundamentals of Sustainable Chemical Science (Taylor & Francis/CRC Press, 2009), Environmental Science and Technology, 2nd ed. Watson, người bạn thân thiết và người ghi chép tiểu sử của Holmes, chỉ có 2 tác phẩm được viết dưới dạng ghi chép của chính Holmes và 2 tác phẩm khác dưới dạng ghi chép của người thứ ba. Hai tác phẩm đầu tiên trong số này, 2 tiểu thuyết ngắn, xuất hiện lần đầu tiên trên tờ Beeton’s Christmas Annual năm 1887 và tờ Lippincott’s Monthly Magazine năm 1890. Là một thám tử có phương pháp điều tra rất khoa học nhưng trong cuộc sống riêng Holmes lại rất bừa bộn, theo như ghi chép của bác sĩ Watson, Holmes vứt bừa bãi mọi thứ ra phòng từ ghi chép vụ án đến sản phẩm của những phản ứng hóa học mà ông đã thực hiện. Holmes cũng có một thói quen xấu đó là sử dụng cocaine và morphine. Ngoài ra ông cũng là người nghiện thuốc lá nặng và nổi tiếng với hình ảnh vừa suy luận về vụ án vừa ngậm tẩu thuốc.

Trong các tác phẩm, Holmes luôn tỏ ra là một người lạnh lùng và thờ ơ với mọi thứ không liên quan đến vụ án. Trong khi điều tra, ông luôn giữ chuỗi suy luận của mình mà chỉ nói ra những kết luận hoặc những nhận xét khó hiểu, chỉ sau khi vụ án đã được phá Holmes mới tiết lộ tất cả những lập luận dẫn tới việc phá án. Holmes cũng là người rất can đảm, ông luôn bình thản xem xét hiện trường các vụ án tàn bạo và kinh khủng, ông không cho phép những điều mê tín dị đoan (như trong tiểu thuyết Con chó săn của dòng họ Baskervilles) hay những tình huống kỳ dị làm mình khiếp sợ.

Tuy có vẻ là người cô độc, lạnh lùng và vô cảm, Holmes thực ra lại rất giỏi trong việc nhận xét về cảm xúc của người đối diện, ông có thể xoa dịu và làm an lòng những khách hàng đang gặp khủng hoảng về tâm lý. Holmes cũng chơi rất thân với bác sĩ Watson và có lẽ cũng từng có tình cảm với một người phụ nữ, đó là bà Irene Adler trong truyện ngắn A Scandal in Bohemia (Vụ tai tiếng xứ Bohemia).
