Georgi Konstantinovich Zhukov (1896-1974) Trong lịch sử chiến tranh thế giới, hiếm có vị tướng nào chưa bao giờ nếm mùi thất bại, chỉ biết có chiến thắng, hết trận này đến trận khác. Trong rất nhiều tướng lĩnh nổi danh trong Thế chiến thứ hai, G.K. Zhukov được xếp đầu bảng về số lượng trận thắng nhiều và quy mô lớn, chiếm bảng vàng về tài năng chỉ đạo chiến dịch,chiến lược. Những chiến tích sáng chói của ông trở thành tài sản vô giá trong kho tàng di sản văn hoá nhân loại. Nó không những có ảnh hưởng lớn về lý luận quân sự của Liên Xô mà cũng có ảnh hưởng rất lớn đối với sự phát triển của lý luận quân sự thế giới.
Ông viết quyển hồi ký “Nhớ lại và suy nghĩ” (nguyên tác tiếng Nga: “Воспоминания и размышления”, tiếng Anh: “Memories and thoughts”) nổi tiếng. Quyển hồi ký này đã được xuất bản vào năm 1969. Ông qua đời năm 1974, thọ 78 tuổi.

“Lão Hạc” của Nam Cao ra mắt bạn đọc năm 1943. Câu chuyện về số phận thê thảm của người nông dân Việt Nam trong bối cảnh đe doạ của nạn đói và cuộc sống cùng túng đã để lại xúc động sâu xa trong lòng độc giả. Đặc biệt, tác giả đã diễn tả tập trung vào tâm trạng nhân vật chính – lão Hạc – xoay quanh việc bán chó đã giúp ta hiểu thêm tấm lòng của một người cha đáng thương, một con người có nhân cách đáng quý và một sự thực phũ phàng phủ chụp lên những cuộc đời lương thiện.

Con chó – cậu Vàng như cách gọi của lão là hình ảnh kỷ niệm duy nhất của đứa con. Hơn thế, cậu Vàng còn là nguồn an ủi của một ông lão cô đơn. Lão cho cậu ăn trong bát, chia xẻ thức ăn, chăm sóc, trò chuyện với cậu như với một con người. Bởi thế, cái ý định “có lẽ tôi bán con chó đấy” của lão bao lần chần chừ không thực hiện được. Nhưng rồi, cuối cùng cậu Vàng cũng đã được bán đi với giá năm đồng bạc.

Cậu Vàng bị bán đi! Có lẽ đó là quyết định khó khăn nhất đời của lão. Năm đồng bạc Đông Dương kể ra là một món tiền to, nhất là giữa buổi đói deo đói dắt. Nhưng lão bán cậu không phải vì tiền, bởi “gạo thì cứ kém mãi đi” mà một ngày lo “ba hào gạo” thì lão không đủ sức. Cậu Vàng trở thành gánh nặng, nhưng bán cậu rồi lão lại đau khổ dày vò chính mình trong tâm trạng nặng trĩu.
Khoảnh khắc “lão cố làm ra vui vẻ” cũng không giấu được khuôn mặt “cười như mếu và đôi mắt lão ầng ậng nước”. Nỗi đau đớn cố kìm nén của lão Hạc như cắt nghĩa cho việc làm bất đắc dĩ, khiến ông giáo là người được báo tin cũng không tránh khỏi cảm giác ái ngại cho lão. Ông giáo hiểu được tâm trạng của một con người phải bán đi con vật bầu bạn trung thành của mình. Cảm giác ân hận theo đuổi dày vò lão tạo nên đột biến trên gương mặt: “Mặt lão đột nhiên co rúm lại. Những vết nhăn xô lại với nhau, ép cho nước mắt chảy ra. Cái đầu lão ngoẹo về một bên và cái miệng móm mém của lão mếu như con nít. Lão hu hu khóc…”. Những suy nghĩ của một ông lão suốt đời sống lương thiện có thể làm người đọc phải chảy nước mắt theo: “Thì ra tôi già bằng này tuổi đầu rồi còn đánh lừa một con chó”. Bản chất của một con người lương thiện, tính cách của một người nông dân nghèo khổ mà nhân hậu, tình nghĩa, trung thực và giàu lòng vị tha được bộc lộ đầy đủ trong đoạn văn đầy nước mắt này. Nhưng không chỉ có vậy, lão Hạc còn trải qua những cảm giác chua chát tủi cực của một kiếp người, ý thức về thân phận của một ông lão nghèo khổ, cô đơn cũng từ liên tưởng giữa kiếp người – kiếp chó: “Kiếp con chó là kiếp khổ thì ta hoá kiếp cho nó để nó làm kiếp người, may ra có sung sướng hơn một chút… kiếp người như kiếp tôi chẳng hạn”. Suy cho cùng, việc bán chó cũng xuất phát từ tấm lòng của một người cha thương con và luôn lo lắng cho hạnh phúc, tương lai của con. Tấm lòng ấy đáng được trân trọng! Hiện thực thật nghiệt ngã đã dứt đứa con ra khỏi vòng tay của lão, cái đói cái nghèo lại tiếp tục cướp đi của lão người bạn cậu Vàng. Bản thân lão như bị dứt đi từng mảng sự sống sau những biến cố, dù cho cố “cười gượng” một cách khó khăn nhưng lão dường như đã nhìn thấy trước cái chết của chính mình. Những lời gửi gắm và món tiền trao cho ông giáo giữ hộ sau lúc bán chó có ngờ đâu cũng là những lời trăng trối. Kết cục số phận của lão Hạc là cái chết được báo trước nhưng vẫn khiến mọi người bất ngờ, thương cảm. Quyết định dữ dội tìm đến cái chết bằng bả chó là giải pháp duy nhất đối với lão Hạc, để lão đứng vững trên bờ lương thiện trước vực sâu tha hoá. Kết thúc bi kịch cũng là thật sự chấm dứt những dằn vặt riêng tư của lão Hạc, nhưng để lại bao suy ngẫm về số phận những con người nghèo khổ lương thiện trong xã hội cũ.
